Rothenburg ober der Tauber

When I looked out the window of our room this morning I saw the Tauber valley shrouded in the morning mist. The tower seemed to be standing sentinal over the town, and the bells of the churches announced the new day.

We joined Graham and Barb at breakfast in the dining room of the hotel, which has spectacular views over the valley. The continental breakfast was excellent!

Audrey enjoyed some "Fresh Air" after breakfast, and I was able to get this nice picture of her framed in the gate to the courtyard behind our hotel.

They have a really interesting and unusual museum in Rothenburg, where they describe crime and punishment in the middle ages. Apparently Audrey and I were having too good a time!

To make up for it, we decided to visit a church, where we saw this wonderful sculpture and stained glass window. Churches are very big in this part of the world...

This is a typical street scene in Rothenburg. There are about 10 square blocks of small shops and resturants along streets like this inside the ancient walled city.

Audrey and I climbed the clock tower of the Rathaus (city hall - great name for a place where polititions hang out, isn't it!). Audrey is afraid of heights like this and only stuck her head out before pulling it back inside. However, I took this picture looking over the walled city.

After all of that climbing it was time for a break in one of the sidewalk cafes!

The hotel where we stayed is built right into the wall of the city! Here is the view from outside the walls, when Audrey and I took a hike down into the Tauber valley.

Here is a nice shot of Audrey admiring the city!

And there is nothing nicer than having a picnic lunch on the wall of the old city!

At night, the Night Watchman comes out! We joined him for a nighttime tour of the city, while he recounted tales of the history of Rothenburg and pointed out the important sites in the city.

Here is a nice shot of the gates of the city, taken during our Watchman's tour. Tomorrow, we are off to Trockau to see if we can find any Bogner relatives!
